Wyatt Tee Walker Silent Film 5

This silent short (circa 1967-1970) was originally filmed by famed Civil Rights Activist Wyatt Tee Walker (1928-2018). In addition to capturing Civil rights activist Ralph David Abernathy and Juanita Abernathy taking in the famed Fifth Avenue sites of New York City, the short presents an evocative juxtaposition between the formality and elegance of black tourism at the time (evidenced in their dressed-to-the-nines sightseeing style), and everyday black intimacies, made visual in an at-home birthday party celebration.

The original film is housed in the Dr. and Mrs. Wyatt Tee Walker Collection of the Boatwright Memorial Library Special Collections at the University of Richmond (USA). ConjureGirlBlue Productions annotated, scripted, and re-cut the short.
